A 34-year-old Kansas City man was charged Saturday with
second-degree murder and armed criminal action in the slaying
of Reginald C. Midget, the son-in-law of Kansas City Mayor Pro
Tem Alvin Brooks.
Donell A. Nolan, who is Brooks' nephew, was arrested after
turning himself in to police about noon Friday. He remained in
custody Saturday after failing to post $200,000 bond.
Prosecutors allege that Nolan shot Midget about 9:20 a.m.
Friday. A witness told police that before the shooting the two
men had argued and pushed each other inside Midget's apartment
in the 3300 block of Agnes Avenue.
Midget, 46, was shot in the stomach and later was
pronounced dead at Truman Medical Center.
Brooks, a former police officer and leader of an anti-crime
group, represents the city's 6th District. He released a
public statement Saturday.
In the statement, Brooks said he considered both men to be
like his own sons. Nolan, the statement noted, has always
called Brooks "Dad."
"He called me after learning how seriously Reggie was
wounded. I picked him up, along with the gun, and surrendered
him to a detective in the violent-crimes division,"
Brooks' statement said.
In a brief interview Saturday, Brooks declined to discuss
why the two men had argued.
"This is like a nightmare," Brooks said.
Midget moved into the two-story house, which had been
converted into apartments, about a week ago, according to
police. In his released statement, Brooks noted that neither
an ongoing feud nor drugs had been involved in the shooting.
"Poor judgment, the availability of guns and the
unwillingness to back off and resolve the matter in a
different way caused Reggie's death within a few heated
moments," the statement said.
