Missouri Considers New Concealed Weapons Bill

Some KC Leaders, Faith-Based Groups Voice Opposition

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Missouri lawmakers are considering a new conceal and carry bill, which would allow people to carry firearms in their cars, KMBC's Krista Tatschl reported.

Should Missourians be allowed to carry concealed weapons?

In April 1999, Missourians voted down Proposition B, a law that would have allowed people to carry concealed weapons.

City leaders and faith-based groups said that the new bill, which is on its way through the Missouri House, is worse than Proposition B.

Tatschl reported that House Bill 1344 allows anyone 21 and over to carry a lawfully possessed firearm in his or her car. No permit is required and neither is training.

"It legitimizes the criminal already running around with a gun in their car," Linda Spence said.

Tatschl said that this time around, voters won't get a say on the matter.

"The people have spoken once, and it's not coming to them to vote again," Linda Booth said.

Tatschl said that she tried to contact the lawmaker sponsoring the bill, but he did not return her calls.

"I know the pain that comes with losing a loved one murdered by gun violence. And people who think guns will, it really trouble me," City Councilman Alvin Brooks said.

[Ed. Gary Davis of WMSA knows as much if not more  than Councilman Brooks the pain of losing a loved one.  Why wasn't Gary asked his opinion on the restrictive gun bill?]
